**Updates IFEX alert of 17 May 1996**
PEN American Center received a reply to its letter to Hong Kong
Governor Chris Patten expressing concern at the attack on editor
Leung Tin-Wai. The letter, signed by Patten, follows:
“Dear Ms. Hollander,
“Thank you for your letter of 17 May 1996. I fully share your
concerns about the brutal attack on Mr. Leung Tin-wai. Indeed, I
was shocked by the fact that this horrific incident should have
taken place in a civilized and free society such as Hong Kong.
“Hong Kong is governed by the rule of law and our Police are
determined to uphold law and order in the territory. We have set
up a special task force to investigate the case, and let me assure
you that we will progress our efforts speedily and thoroughly. We
shall throw in all necessary resources to bring the assailants to
justice as soon as possible, and we will make public any new
developments in the case.
“Yours ever,
“Christopher Patten”
