(MISA/IFEX) – On 18 June 2000, Sibusiso Ndlovu, a senior photographer with “The Chronicle”, the Bulawayo-based state-owned daily paper, was attacked by suspected war veterans and ruling Zimbabwe African National Union-Patriotic Front (ZANU-PF) party supporters when he tried to take pictures of the group as they clashed with members of an opposition political party, ZAPU.
“The Chronicle” reported that Ndlovu sustained injuries on his nose and upper lip. He was punched and kicked by the assailants, who said they did not want anyone taking pictures of them.
Cain Nkala, the head of the Bulawayo War Veterans Association, and Effort Nkomo, the ZANU-PF Bulawayo provincial spokesperson, apologised for the attack, saying it was uncalled for.
