(CEHURDES/IFEX) – On 9 April 2003, police officers in Kathmandu verbally abused and attempted to beat photojournalists Prakash Mathema, Ravi Manandhar, Sagar Shrestha and Rajesh Gurung. The incident occurred in the Ratnapark/Ghantaghar area of the capital. The journalists were taking photographs of students affiliated with different political parties who were protesting over the killing of student leader Devi Ram Poudel. Poudel, chairman of the Nepal Progressive Students’ Union, in Butwal (western Nepal), was killed when police fired on demonstrators protesting a price hike in petroleum products.
CEHURDES condemns the police officers’ attack on the photojournalists and urges authorities to respect press freedom and freedom of expression.
