Sir:
Recent police activity in Vanuatu has been brought to our attention.
It appears as though your police force members have erred in the extreme in the past few days.
First of all, there was the assault on a photographer, Samuel Taffo – a normal media practitioner simply carrying out his day-to-day activity. This in and of itself is reprehensible.
To make matters worse, in addition, the publisher of the Vanuatu Daily Post, Marc Neil-Jones, was assaulted, improperly imprisoned and confined for a considerable length of time.
The Pacific Island News Association (PINA) condemns, in the strongest possible terms, these outrageous actions on the part of the Police Force of Vanuatu.
Further, we demand that you apologize to Mr. Neil Jones and his photographer and that you instruct your staff to deport themselves in a manner of which you and the pacific community can be proud.
These assaults and the inappropriate action of your people and the system are entirely unacceptable in a modern society.
