(IFJ/IFEX) – On Wednesday, 16 June 1999, three of the fifteen accused of the
murder of journalists Isabel Chumpitaz Panta and José Amaya Jacinto were
sentenced to life imprisonment by the National Court for Aggravated Crimes
in Piura, judge Jorge Eduardo Díaz Campos presiding.

Defendants Roso Cruz Anastacio (also known as “Chucky”), José Mercedes
Albines Sandoval (known as Guerra”) and Irineo Marchena Cordova (known as
“Patita de Cuy”), were given the maximum sentence possible for their roles
as ringleaders of the operation.
Reneldo Nery Navarro Nima, Jorge Mercedes Albines Sandoval (known as
“Cojo”), Henry Santos Bautista (known as “Ñarras”), Marco Arturo Imán Zeñas
(known as “Casco”) and Rigoberto Sernaqué Vera were each sentenced to
twenty-five years in prison.
Luciano More, Víctor Hugo Cordova Vilchez and Simon Cruz Anastacio (known as
“Cabezon”), were sentenced to fifteen years in prison. Arturo Cobeñas
Cardoza (known as “Estrella”) and Martín Lozada Castillo, were each
sentenced to twenty years.
Walter Rosales Godos or Víctor Marino Huertas Pajuelo was sentenced to
thirty years in prison, Manuel Gerardo Albines Rivas to five years and
Pedro Pablo Eléspuro Saavedra received a four year suspended prison
sentence.
The accused were ordered to pay 200 thousand nuevos soles (approximately
US$60,312) to the Chumpitaz family.
The Court reserved judgement on missing defendants José Lozada Ramos,
Jacinto Chero Chunga, Luis Rubén Lopez Silipú and Segundo Sosa Litano, until
they are located.
