(RSF/IFEX) – In a letter to Home Affairs Minister Moin-ud-Din Haider, RSF protested about police violence against journalists inside the Lahore Press Club. “We call for a serious investigation to be conducted in order to identify those responsible for this unjustified violence, and to sanction them”, the letter said. The organisation again asked the minister to guarantee the safety of journalists.
According to the information collected by RSF, a large group of policemen entered the building of the Lahore Press Club on 10 July 2000, while Omer Ailya, leader of the traders’ movement which has protested strongly against the government’s economic policy, was giving a press conference. The policemen, led by officers Jawad Dogar and Abbas Shah, pushed and beat journalists who tried to prevent them from entering the building. The policemen, who had an arrest warrant, forced their way into the Press Club and clubbed some journalists before arresting the traders’ leader, who was taken to Karachi.
