(RSF/IFEX) – Police officer Apolonio Medrano and five other persons have been arrested for the 31 July 2004 murder of radio host Roger Mariano, of local radio station DZJC, in the Cordillera region, northern Philippines.
On 16 November, police in Laoag arrested Medrano and five others who are implicated in the murders of the journalist and the mayor of Ilocos Norte. The police chief described Medrano as the ringleader.
Mariano’s murder may have been linked to remarks he made on the air about protection provided by several police officers to organisers of illegal gaming. He had also received threats following a report on corruption involving a local electric company.
