(FNJ/IFEX) – On 3 June 2006, Gyanendra KC, a central council member of the Dhaulagiri and Myagdi branches of the FNJ and a correspondent of Channel Nepal Television, was struck by a police officer when he approached the District Police Office in Banglung, a western district of Nepal, to investigate a story.
A local woman had previously gone to the police station seeking help but was mistreated by District Superintendent of Police Akhtar Ali Ansari. When KC went to ask questions about the incident, he received two blows from Ansari.
When asked by a civil society representative about his striking the journalist, Ansari said that he had beaten KC because he was not aware that KC was a journalist. Ansari also asked the person inquiring to not make the incident public.
The FNJ condemns the incident and has urged the authorities to investigate and take the appropriate action.
