(CJFE/IFEX) – The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) have returned the video footage of Aboriginal People’s Television Network (APTN) reporter Todd Lamirande, who had it confiscated after covering a clash in Sun Peaks, British Columbia between protesters and local supporters of the proposed development of a ski resort in the area. Lamirande had videotaped part of the confrontation, which later turned violent.
However, the RCMP only returned the original tapes after making copies of them and playing them in court as evidence during a bail hearing for a person who was charged with mischief arising out of the 24 June protest. Those copies remain in police hands.
The APTN is proceeding with legal action, which includes a request for damages against the RCMP for Lamirande’s illegal detention as well as the illegal search and seizure of his APTN vehicle and its contents, including the video that he shot.
