Nairobi, May 21 2001
Police seize newspapers
Police and Nairobi City Council guards impounded numerous copies of newspapers from newsvendors on Saturday, May 19, 2001.
Most newsstands downtown were empty as newspapers and magazines had been taken away. Some of the vendors were arrested.
Samuel Maina, the national secretary of the Newspaper Vendors Association of Kenya, said the publications were being impounded without any explanation by the officers, some of who tore up business licences issued by the City Council.
But a police spokesman said those arrested were found selling products they were not licensed to sell. Central Police Station chief Sammy Maritim said some of the vendors licensed to sell newspapers were found selling sweets, cigarettes and textbooks.
The vendors who were arrested were released on a free bond to appear in court on Monday, May 21, 2001.
