(IMI/IFEX) – The following is a 22 January 2007 statement from IMI, an interim member of IFEX:
UkrPoshta Post Office broke contract on distribution of Litsa Newspaper
In mid-January 2007, the UkrPoshta post office broke its contract without explanation by refusing to distribute the newspaper “Litsa Dniepropetrovsk”, according to the newspaper’s editor-in-chief, Olyona Harahuts.
This was preceded by an incident on 27 December 2007, in which an edition of the newspaper was withdrawn from newsstands belonging to “Ukrposhta” (“Ukrainian Post”). The edition in question carried an article entitled “Headless Horsemen”, on the investigation of a criminal case against Ivan Kulichenko, the mayor of Dnipropetrovsk. Criminal proceedings have been initiated against Kulichenko and some other officials for the alleged misuse of municipal funds intended for the construction of a health centre in Crimea.
Harahuts appealed to the post office for an explanation and was told that the newspaper is to be distributed in future on the basis of a new agreement still to be concluded with the regional office of UkrPoshta.
