(RSF/IFEX) – According to information made available by RSF on 4 August, on
2 August, Sri Lankan President Chandrika Kumaratunga said that censorship of
war reporting was “likely to continue for some time.” President Kumaratunga
added that “the local media will have to prove to us that they have learnt
to be responsible.” Censorship, which was also imposed on foreign media on 5
June, followed the intensification of fighting between the national army
and the LTTE (Tamil Tigers) in the north of the country (see IFEX alert of 9
June 1998).

Civil and Political Rights, Article 19 of which guarantees the freedom to
inform and to be informed
media to report on the war and to allow people to be informed about the
situation in the north of Sri Lanka
