(RSF/IFEX) – RSF is expressing its surprise and concern over remarks made by
the president’s communications advisor, Jesus Kouassi Yobouet, concerning
Fabienne Pompey, a French journalist stationed in Abidjan.
According to RSF, in an opinion piece read on national television, Yobouet
attacked Pompey, a contributor to several French media outlets in Côte
d’Ivoire. According to the remarks made by Yobouet, Pompey had allegedly
referred to President Bédié as a “fascist” in an Agence France Press wire
story and as “xenophobic and tribalistic” in an article published in “Le
Monde”.
Not only does RSF dispute the veracity of these accusations, the
organisation believes that these remarks, made by an advisor close to the
president, do nothing to help further a policy of appeasement in Côte
d’Ivoire.
Recommended Action
Send appeals to the president:
nothing to help further a policy of appeasement in Côte d’Ivoire
illegally detained for the past five months
out” to become a “country where the right to expression and opinion is
respected,” RSF believes it is more urgent to free these two journalists
than to attack a journalist who did nothing more than
exercise her profession in accordance with professional ethics
on
this incident in order to clarify the situation and put an end to attacks on
freedom of the press in Côte d’Ivoire, a country which, until a few months
ago, had been presented as a model country in West Africa
