(WAJA/IFEX) – Chris FM, a privately owned radio station at Berekum, in the Brong Ahafo region of Ghana, was closed on 6 November 2000 on the orders of the Regional Security Council.
The closure follows allegations that an aspiring parliamentary candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nkrabeah Effah Darteh, had used the station to incite his supporters to attack supporters of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) on Sunday 5 November. Darteh has denied the allegation. Nineteen persons were injured in the clash between supporters of the two parties.
Armed soldiers have taken positions at the premises of the radio station, whose closure is temporary, according to the authorities.
The NPP is the largest opposition party in upcoming general elections. It is engaged in a close race with the NDC for votes across the country.
