(JED/IFEX) – Innocent Prosper Mbumba, provincial director of the weekly “L’Eveil”, in Kananga, capital of Western Kasai province (1000 km from Kinshasa, in the middle of the Democratic Republic of Congo), who was arrested on Thursday 30 August 2001 and kept in custody in one of the National Information Agency’s (Agence nationale des renseignements, ANR/Kananga) provincial bureau’s underground cells, was released the same day, in the evening, after giving a statement concerning the articles he wrote about the head of stateâs visit to Kananga.
The journalist had gone to the ANRâs Kananga office in response to a summons he received from that office, “inviting” him to present himself at the ANR “immediately, with a copy of the 20 August 2001 edition (issue 242) of “L’Eveil”.”
The newspaper “L’Eveil” has been the subject of a smear campaign in certain private media outlets in the pay of the provincial authorities(KHRT and RTKM).
