(RSF/IFEX) – Reporters Without Borders hails justice minister Jean-Joseph Exumé’s decision to remove the seals that were placed over the entrance to Idéale FM, a privately-owned radio station based in the north-western town of Port-de-Paix, by local prosecutor Jean Frédéric Bénêche on 8 April 2009.
Exumé summoned Bénêche and the secretary-general of SOS Journalistes, Joseph Guyler C. Delva, and told them he regarded Idéale FM’s closure as an unacceptable act of censorship. Bénêche closed the station in an attempt to get it to reveal its source for a report about an alleged drug trafficker being held in Florida.
On learning of the minister’s decision, Idéale FM owner Wilfrid Salomon, who is in Miami, pledged to give the Haitian judicial authorities a copy of the cassette with the required information.
