(JED/IFEX) – On 16 June 2000, Richard Nsamba Olangi, publisher of the twice weekly “Le Messager Africain”, appeared before a special hearing of the Kinshasa/Gombe High Court, held at the Kinshasa Penitentiary and Re-education Center (Centre pénitentiaire et de rééducation de Kinshasa, CPRK, formerly known as Makala Central Prison).
The journalist had to answer to three charges brought against him by the public prosecutor’s office, which included distribution of false information, insulting the authorities and making harmful statements. The journalist’s lawyer refuted each of the grievances, and asked that Nsamba be released, since the accusations against him were groundless. The matter is being deliberated and a verdict is expected in about one week, in accordance with the law.
The journalist was arrested on 12 June and transferred to the CPRK on 14 June, where he shares the same wing as criminals and other dangerous offenders.
