Paris, 19 August 1999
For Immediate Release
Queen Noor of Jordan to address Newspapers in Education Conference
Her Majesty Queen Noor of Jordan will present the keynote address at Reading
for Life! – the 3rd International Newspapers in Education Conference being
held by the World Association of Newspapers in Paris next month.
“We are delighted to have the Queen address the conference, which will focus
on the role newspapers can play in increasing literacy and developing
life-long readers,” said Timothy Balding, Director General of WAN. “Her
Majesty’s work in the area of education has been extensive, as is her
commitment to a wide range of humanitarian projects.”
Queen Noor initiates, directs and sponsors national and international
educational and peace projects, including “Education for Peace” programmes
promoting tolerance, reconciliation and understanding among her country’s
young people. She is president of United World Colleges, a network of 10
equal-opportunity international secondary schools that foster cross-cultural
understanding and global peace.
She is also involved in curriculum development and teacher training
programmes through the Jubilee School, a co-educational secondary school for
outstanding scholarship students from Jordan and the region. She is also
head of the King Hussein Foundation, a non-profit, non-governmental
organization established after the death of her husband earlier this year.
It focuses on democracy and peace, education and leadership, and environment
and health.
The NIE conference will focus on strategies developed by newspapers and
schools to create a new generation of lifelong readers and responsible
citizens. It will be held in Paris from 5 to 8 September.
The Paris-based WAN represents 15,000 newspapers world-wide. Its membership
includes 61 national newspaper associations, individual newspaper executives
in 93 countries, 17 news agencies and seven regional press groups.
