A retired police officer shot at a radio blocktimer last 28 March 2014 in San Jose town, Occidental Mindoro province, according to town police sources. The suspect allegedly works as a security guard for the town mayor the blocktimer had criticized in his radio program.
San Jose town is about 400 kilometers south of Manila.
According to a police report, radio blocktimer Radamalyn Cardoza was dining out with his family in the evening of March 28 when retired policeman Cornelio Callado fired at him. Cardoza managed to run away while the police arrested Callado.
Cardoza hosts a blocktime radio program that airs on dwSJ 97.7 Bambi FM. He was a known critic of San Jose mayor Romulo Festin. According to a report from The Philippine Star newspaper, Callado is a Festin body guard.
Cardoza filed a complaint against Callado for attempted murder and illegal possession of fire arms. But on 31 March 2014, the provincial prosecutors’ office dismissed the suit because the police had failed to produce the gun Callado used.
The attempted murder charge was brought to the San Jose regional trial court, but the judge allowed Callado to post bail, amounting to PHP120,000 (about USD2700), on 1 April 2014.
