An unidentified gunman shot and wounded a radio commentator in Dagupan City on 26 August 2014. The police said they have yet to determine the motive behind the incident, but the victim said his exposes on illegal drugs may have caused the shooting.
Orlando “Orly” Navarro was talking to a tricycle driver in Pantal District at around 1:00 a.m. Tuesday 26 August when a gunman shot him, according to the police. Navarro was wounded in the back. The tricycle driver immediately brought him to the hospital.
Navarro is the station manager of dwIZ 89.3 FM in Pangasinan and hosted two daily morning radio programs, Isyu at Reaksyon (Issue and Reaction) from 6 to 7 a.m. and Orly sa IZ (Orly at IZ) from 8 to 10 a.m.
A report in the Philippine Daily Inquirer said Navarro will undergo surgery to extract the bullet from his body, which nearly pierced his heart.
The police have not yet determined the motive for the incident but according to an alert from the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines, Navarro said his recent exposes on the proliferation of illegal drugs in Pantal may have been the reason he was shot.
