Unidentified callers threatened to kill "Ujjyalo FM" journalist Madan Thakur and his family.
(Freedom Forum/IFEX) – On 14 November 2010 an unidentified group issued a death threat to journalist Madan Thakur, a reporter for “Ujjyalo FM” in Rautahat, a southern district of Nepal.
The group phoned Thakur from mobile number +977 980 729 7624 and threatened to kill him and his entire family.
“We will kill you. If you flee then we will take action against all your family members,” Thakur quoted the group as saying. According to Thakur, an unknown group has regularly been insulting him over the phone.
A group of journalists visited the District Police Office in Rautahat and demanded an immediate investigation into the incident. Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Govinda Thapaliya pledged to take action against the guilty parties. The reason behind the death threat is yet to be identified.
Freedom Forum strongly condemns the incident and demands an immediate investigation. Further, Freedom Forum asks the government to provide Thakur with sufficient security so that he can continue practicing his journalism.
