(CMFR/IFEX) – The terrorist group Abu Sayyaf (ASG) is reportedly hot on the trails of prominent personalities, including some members of the local media, in Zamboanga City.
In a letter sent to local radio stations in Zamboanga City and nearby towns during the second week of November 2005, the group said that it has dispatched liquidation squads to carry out kidnappings and killings of top city and military officials, journalists, business figures, lawyers, doctors, and a university president.
Abu Omar, the source of the said letter and identified as ASG’s information officer, said they have been conducting surveillance operations on their targets, and are keen to accomplish their mission. However, he did not mention any reasons for the planned killings.
Number one on the ASG’s hit list is RGMA Super Radyo Zamboanga program director Vic Alvarez, who anchors a public affairs program.
Omar’s letter is the seventh mailed to RGMA and other local media outlets.
