(RSF/IFEX) – RSF is expressing concern further to the jamming of Radio
Soleil’s programmes. According to RSF’s information, programmes of the
private station Radio Soleil, which is close to the National Assembly of
Woodcutters (Rassemblement national des bûcherons, RNB, an opposition
party), have been scrambled since 7:00 p.m. (local time) Monday, 7 December
1998. The radio station’s telephone lines were also cut. That same day, the
National Communication Council (Conseil National de la Communication, CNC)
published a press release criticising Radio Soleil for not having respected
“journalistic ethics” during the programme “Feed-Back”. This programme gave
listeners the opportunity to call in and denounce, live on air, fraudulent
activities which they had witnessed during the casting of ballots in the
presidential election of Sunday, 6 December. The CNC text cautioned the
radio station and warned it would be permanently suspended for any
subsequent offence.
Recommended Action
Send appeals to the President of the National Communication Council:
while
condemning calls for violence which may have been broadcast on the radio
station, and reminding him that this breach in ethics is unacceptable
Article 94 of its Constitution, and stating that such unexplained radio
jamming is unacceptable
result of certain programmes of the station, should this be the case
