(RSF/IFEX) – According to information made available by RSF on 20 July 1998,
during the night of 18 or 19 July 1998, the offices of the private radio
station Cadena Cope in San Sebastien (in northern Spain) were attacked with
molotov cocktails, causing mild damage to the premises. Responsibility for
the attack has been attributed by investigators to pro-independence Basque
youth close to the armed Basque separatist organisation ETA.
This attack comes after the temporary suspension, on 15 July 1998, of the
pro-independence daily “Egin” and the private radio station Egin-Irratia, as
part of an operation to determine the financial base of ETA (see IFEX alert
of 20 July 1998).
On 16 July 1998, a fire attributed by Spanish authorities to Basque
independence sources close to ETA destroyed the regional headquarters of
radio Cadena Ser in San Sebastien.
