(WAJA/IFEX) – On 21 November 2000, Chris FM, a radio station at Berekum, which was closed down by Ghanaian authorities was reopened. The station was closed down on 8 November following allegations that it had broadcast inflammatory statements by an opposition politician.
Briefing the press, Donald Adabre, regional minister and chairman of the Regional Security Council (REGSEC), said that the council was convinced that its objective for the closure had been achieved. He said that the REGSEC found ample evidence of the prevalence of peace and order in the area, which made the temporary closure no longer necessary.
The Ghana Journalists Association and the National Media Commission had earlier sent delegations to the region to investigate the matter. Subsequently, the ban order was lifted.
Sources close to the Media Commission say it will be issuing a statement on its findings.
Meanwhile, a Sunyani Circuit Tribunal has started hearing the case in which Nkrabeah Effah Dartey has been charged with spreading false rumours to raise fear and alarm and thus heighten political tension in Berekum. He is the candidate of the New Patriotic Party (the largest opposition party) for the Berekum constituency in elections scheduled for 7 December.
