The decision to reopen Radio Bandundu FM was taken after a meeting between the provincial governor and a delegation of journalists from the radio station.
(JED/IFEX) – 18 November 2010 – Journaliste en danger (JED) welcomes the 17 November reopening of Radio Bandundu FM, a community station broadcasting in the town of Bandundu, capital of the province of the same name, located in western DR Congo. The radio station was closed on 30 September on verbal orders of Richard Ndambu Wolang, governor of the aforementioned province.
According to information obtained by JED, the decision to reopen the station was taken after a 16 November meeting between the governor and a delegation of journalists from Radio Bandundu FM.
The closure stemmed from a 30 September 2010 raid by a group of police officers led by the province’s governor following the 29 September airing of a progamme called “Découverte” (discovery). During this show, which focused on “the roles of a provincial member of parliament”, one of three guests reportedly expressed agreement with the remarks of a listener who criticised a group of MPs who did not want to sign a motion of distrust against Governor Ndambu.
