(CPJ/IFEX) – Former military junta soldiers in Sierra Leone released a
journalist and one other hostage on the night of Thursday 6 August 1999. The
two freed hostages were among forty people kidnapped near the capital
Freetown on Wednesday 5 August.

The journalist, local Reuters reporter Christo Johnson, later told the
British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) that the soldiers said they would
free the remaining hostages once their demands for food, medicine and
greater recognition under the Lome peace agreement were met.
Three other journalists remain in captivity.
