On 14 June 1995 in Katmandu, independent journalist Lekhnath
Bhandari was assaulted by members of a procession on its way to
the residence of King Birendra to protest against his decision to
dissolve the National Assembly. The journalist’s camera was
broken and his press card was ripped by individuals in the group.
On 19 June, during a demonstration by the Students’ Union of
Nepal (a group with close ties to the opposition Nepalese
Congress party), Sridhar Acharya, a journalist with the
government daily “Gorkhapatra” was hit in the Katmandu
neighbourhood of Ason, and his moped was damaged. During the same
demonstration, R.K. Dharmasthali, a journalist with “Mahanagar”,
a daily allied to the Communists in power, was also assaulted.
