(RSF/IFEX) – RSF very strongly condemns the European Union’s decision not to
uphold any resolution condemning China before the United Nations Commission
of Human Rights in Geneva. According to Robert Menard, Secretary General of
RSF: “We very firmly condemn this backwards step taken by European leaders
concerning the protection of human rights in China. We are unable to accept
the statement of European diplomats that “concrete progress” has been made,
seeing as at least twelve journalists remain imprisoned, dissidents who have
been freed are forced into exile, and freedom of expression in China is
restricted, quite simply, to the expression of the communist party.”
RSF reminds these authorities that, on 1 February 1998, four Chinese poets
from the Guizhou province were detained for questioning just as they were
about to launch a non-official literary revue. One of them was arrested with
his six year old son. RSF has not been able to obtain any information about
them since they were placed in detention.
RSF has appealed to European authorities asking them to include
non-governmental human rights organizations in discussions with Chinese
authorities so that they might better evaluate the “progress” achieved
therein
