Reporters sans frontières (Reporters Without Borders) launches an international network of affiliated organisations
Nine national and regional organisations for the defence of press freedom have decided to affiliate with Reporters Sans Frontières in an international network of co-operation and mutual aid, the RSF Network.
To date, the RSF Network is composed of Journalistes en danger (JED-Democratic Republic of the Congo), Instituto Prensa y Sociedad (IPYS-Peru), Périodistas (Argentina), Bangladesh Centre for Development, Journalism and Communication (BCDJC-Bangladesh), Burma Media Association (Burma, in exile), Afghan Center for the Promotion of Communication (Pakistan), La Fondation pour la Défense de la Glasnost (Russia), Institut des Mass Médias (IMI-Ukraine), Observatoire pour la Défense de la Liberté de la presse, de l’Edition et de la Création (OLPEC-Tunisia).
Members of the RSF Network met for the first time on 22 September in Paris and defined several main topics of collaboration:
– The exchange of information on the situation of press freedom in the countries covered by the RSF Network
– The fight against impunity in the murders of journalists
– Bilateral projects, such as joint investigations in countries where freedom of the press is compromised and specific operations linked to the news in countries or areas from which RSF Network members come
– Participation in events and campaigns by Reporters Sans Frontières: Sponsors Day, 28 November, and International Press Freedom Day on 3 May
Reporters Sans Frontières has opened two new bureaus in Montreal and Moscow. Each is run by a representative of the organisation, which ensures information gathering on press freedom in his/her country and the circulation of press releases and reports published by RSF.
At present, Reporters Sans Frontières has nine national sections (Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Great Britain, Italy, Sweden and Switzerland), with bureaus in Abidjan, Bangkok, Tokyo and Washington and some one hundred correspondents world-wide.
