(RSF/IFEX) – In a letter to Syrian President Hafez Al-Assad, RSF has
expressed its grave concern about the situation of two journalists jailed
since 1982 and 1984. RSF asked the Syrian president to “use his influence to
assure their expeditious release.” RSF added: “Since Fateh Jamous was to be
released in 1997 and Aslan Abdelkarim in 1999,” the organisation considers
“these detentions to be of an arbitrary nature.”
Abdelkarim is editor-in-chief of the bi-monthly magazine “Al Nida Al Cha’bi”
and the monthly “Al Raya Al Amra”. Jamous is also a contributor to the two
publications. They were arrested in 1984 and 1982, respectively, and
sentenced in 1994 to fifteen years in prison. According to RSF’s
information, they were charged at the time with “membership in a banned
party” (Communist Action Party), “distribution of remarks critical of the
principles of the 8 March 1963 revolution”, and “distribution of false
information liable to lead to the confusion of public opinion”.
