(CEMESP/IFEX) – The chairman of the ruling Unity Party of Liberia, Dr. Charles Clarke, has threatened to take actions against journalists who he claims are “card carrying member of opposition political parties”.
Clarke made the comments during a radio talk show on the local radio station, Star Radio, on 26 September 2006.
However, he fell short of stating what actions he intends to take against the journalists.
The government of Liberia and journalists, especially the Press Union of Liberia, have had uneasy relations recently.
President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf had accused the Liberian media of being irresponsible and unprofessional, and the Press Union of Liberia had responded that the president was frustrated that news reports were not supportive of her policies (see IFEX alert of 4 September 2006).
