(RSF/IFEX) – Reporters Without Borders and the Burma Media Association condemn the transfers of blogger Nay Phon Latt and poet Saw Wai to prisons far from Rangoon.
Sentenced to 20 years in prison by a special court in Insein prison on 10 November 2008, Nay Phon Latt has been moved to a prison in Pa-an, the capital of the southeastern state of Karen. Saw Wai, who was sentenced the same day to two years in prison, has been moved to Oboe, in the central region of Mandalay.
“These prisons are known for their appalling sanitary conditions,” Reporters Without Borders said. “In addition to being unjustly convicted, they must now serve their sentences far from their families and friends, in prisons where the conditions are particularly bad. The transfers have yet again highlighted the military government’s inhuman nature.”
