On 3 May 1996, a police squad from Lima’s security forces
assaulted a group of striking municipal employees as well as
several other people who were in the vicinity. Police also
assaulted journalists from the magazine “Caretas”, the daily
newspaper “El Comercio” as well as from some television stations
who were covering the protest by the striking employees. Javier
Zapata, a reporter for “Caretas”, had his camera wrecked by
police, while other journalists were punched and shoved around in
order to prevent them from recording footage of the
confrontation.
An investigation team, put into place by Peruvian authorities
after the incident, is reportedly going to approach the
television stations in order to obtain video copies of the
confrontation. Angel Tacchino, a member of the investigation
team, spoke with the journalists involved in order to get their
account of the events of 3 May so as to determine who the person
was who ordered the police intervention. Tacchino added that once
that person was identified, he would be dismissed from his
position.
