(CEHURDES/IFEX) – On 21 April 2004, senior photojournalist Gopal Chitrakar was seriously injured by police officers who were dispersing protesters in Baghbazar, Kathmandu. Chitrakar works for the daily “Kantipur”. Journalists Sagar Shrestha and Milan Pandey were also injured in the incident.
Chitrakar suffered a serious head injury after being struck by stones that were thrown by police. He received medical treatment at Baghbazar’s Miteri hospital. Shrestha and Pandey suffered minor injuries after being hit by stones in the same incident. Police also used batons to break up the demonstration.
On 20 April, journalist Prajaya Shukla, who works for the weekly “Jana Ekata”, was also injured in Kathmandu. The journalist’s left leg was broken by a police officer who struck him with a baton while breaking up a protest rally organised by five political parties. Police officers assaulted and injured several other journalists in the incident, despite the fact media representatives displayed their press cards and wore clearly identifiable press jackets.
