(CEHURDES/IFEX) – CEHURDES – a Kathmandu-based freedom of expression monitoring group – condemns the abduction of singer and former journalist Ram Prasad Khanal by activists of the Maoist-affiliated Young Communist League (YCL).
Khanal was abducted from Bhairahawa, in Rupandehi district of southern Nepal, on 8 September 2007 by a team led by the district chief of the YCL, Milan.
Reports say that the YCL activists abducted Khanal for having “supported the erstwhile royal regime” and for allegedly “embezzling money by misusing (the YCL’s) name”. His whereabouts remain unknown.
CEHURDES condemns the abduction of Khanal and wishes to remind the Maoists of their commitment to abide by the peace pact, which includes a provision that expressly states that all sides will refrain from engaging in activities such as abduction.
