The Nepali media faced an unprecedented number of attacks during 8-24 May 2012, Freedom Forum reports.
(Freedom Forum/IFEX) – As the deadline for the Constitution promulgation (May 27) was quickly approaching, political discussions and party decisions on contentious issues of “restructuring of state” created furor in Nepal. Various parts of the country saw a spate of protests and struggles, including banda (general shutdown) by different ethnic groups. The people in the far west united in their campaign to keep their region undivided while the Tharu community in the southern plain protested against this. Similar other struggles carried on, as ethnic communities fought for their rights and over the issue of how their identity in the provinces will be carved out under the federal set up.
