(JED/IFEX) – Gérard-Désiré Angengwa Agbeme, managing editor of the Kinshasa newspaper “La Voix de la Vérité”, appeared without a lawyer before the Kinshasa/Pont Kasa-Vubu Court on Tuesday 1 February 2000. A lawsuit for “harmful accusations” has been filed against the journalist by Olivier Bierlaire, Tambwe Lombe and Tshamala Kazadi Tshamy, technical personnel of the Kinshasa football team Daring Club Motema Pembe (DCMP).
Bierlaire, Tambwe and Tshamala have denounced statements made by Angengwa in issues 1 and 5 of “La Voix de la Vérité”, dated 5 and 24 January, respectively. The newspaper stated in these issues that Bierlaire, Tambwe and Tshamala make up a “band of adventurers and fetishist sports swindlers”. The three individuals are seeking damages and interest in the amount of 5,000 Congolese Francs.
Further to Angengwa’s request, the court has postponed the defence and prosecutors’ initial public hearing until Tuesday 8 February.
