(GHM/IFEX) – The following is a 6 May 2004 GHM press release:
TOPIC: GREEK STATE TV CENSORSHIP AT THE REQUEST OF PRIME MINISTER’S OFFICE AMIDST GENERALIZED ACCOMPLICE SILENCE
Greek Helsinki Monitor (GHM) highlights “Eleftherotypia”‘s coverage (on 5 and 6 May 2004) stating that the cancellation, on 3 May 2004, by Greek state television station ET-3 of the showing of the documentary “The Other Side”, produced by journalist Fani Toupalgiki, was the result of an intervention from the Prime Minister’s Office, and was attributed by the Director General of ET-3 to the forthcoming visit by Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan. “Eleftherotypia” also commented that no journalist union and no political party condemned this censorship.
Since the publication of these articles, condemnations by the Journalists’ Union of Macedonia and Thrace (ESIEMTh) and the small center-left extra-parliamentary party AEKA have been issued. This accomplice silence, as “Eleftherotypia” comments, shows the “very important power that the nationally-minded persons of all sides have.” For their sake, press freedom and human rights in Greece are once more sacrificed, comments GHM.
