(JED/IFEX) – Eugène Risasi Tambwe, journalist and activist of state-owned Radio-Télévision Nationale Congolaise (RTNC) was released on 31 July 2007 at 3:00 p.m. (local time). On 2 August, Tambwe told Journalist in Danger (JED), that he was stripped of his shoes, handcuffed and whipped 30 times while held in a military camp. No charges were brought against him.
According to Risasi, Vincent Hata and Michel Shango were still being held for further investigation. Makolo Tshilumbayi was not identified as an RTNC journalist.
Vincent Hata, Michel Shango et Eugène Risasi Tambwe were arrested on 26 and 27 July 2007 by agents of the Republican Guard, and transferred on 28 July to the headquarters of the Directorate for General Intelligence and Special Services (DRGS), which is known as Kin Mazière military camp.
The journalists are accused of “publicly insulting the president, trying to destabilise RTNC and discrediting the government by launching a strike.”
