(RSF/IFEX) – Reporters Without Borders has condemned the 22 November 2006 attack on Hasibur Rahman Bilu, a reporter for the “Daily Star”, Radio Today and radio Deutsche Welle, in Bogra, north of Dhaka, by student activists belonging to an organisation linked to the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).
The journalist needed hospital treatment for serious leg injuries after the activists beat him with bamboo canes. He asked to be discharged to his own home for fear of reprisals.
His attackers accused him of writing articles critical of their organisation. Rahman Bilu confirmed to Reporters Without Borders that his articles were behind the assault. He added that police officers who were present at the scene failed to intervene to save him.
Reporters Without Borders called for an investigation into the incident and for those responsible to be punished. The organisation added that it was vital that the authorities protect Rahman Bilu, who has reported widely on Jihadist movements in Bangladesh.
