(RSF/IFEX) – According to RSF, at the end of March 1998, the Director of the
Committee for Radio and Television of Transdniestria asked the Minister
responsible for security in the “self-proclaimed Republic of Transdniestria”
to shut down the TVK television chain, which broadcasts out of Tiraspol. He
also asked the Minister to bring TVK’s director, Ernest Abildaiev, before a
criminal court on charges of “illegal activities and defamation”, which
could lead to a prison term upon conviction.
While Abildaiev obtained an official broadcast license from the Audiovisual
Coordinating Counsel for Chisinau, Tiraspol authorities have refused him
permission to broadcast in Transniedstria for the last year. Abildaiev
therefore decided to broadcast without the “authorization” of local
authorities.
RSF is concerned about the threat of legal proceedings against Abildaiev and
the pressure tactics used to attempt to shut down TVK.
