(CJES/IFEX) – Police staff seized a television camera from Roman Korolenko, a journalist of Russia TV channel, as well as a still photography camera from Sergey Miheev, a correspondent of “Kommersant-Daily” newspaper. The incident happened on 20 April 2006 in the Krasnogorsk district of the Moscow region, where the journalists had arrived to film a fire at a construction site which claimed the lives of 11 people.
Yuliya Mihaylina, press secretary of Russia TV’s “Vesti-Moskva” programme, told Eho Moskvi radio station that Korolenko, cameraman for the “Vesti-Moskva” programme, was assigned by the editorial office the task of obtaining footage of the fire site. According to her, Korolenko was approached by three police officers who demanded he hand over the camera. When the journalist refused to do so, the policemen took away the equipment by force.
Eho Moskvi radio station reported that it managed to contact Miheev. The journalist reported that after he had taken a photograph, police took away his camera and took him to the Krasnogorsk district police station, alleging that their actions were motivated by the journalist’s “insubordination” to the law enforcement agencies.
