Reporter Anwar Kamal and his driver, Nasim Ahmed, were returning after covering a story in Dadu-Manchar Lake when unknown assailants opened fire on their vehicle.
(PPF/IFEX) – Anwar Kamal, a reporter for Geo News, Pakistan’s leading private television channel, and his driver, Nasim Ahmed, were injured when unknown assailants opened fire on their vehicle in Hyderabad, Sindh province, on July 24, 2010.
Kamal and his driver were returning after covering a story in Dadu-Manchar Lake at around 11:00pm, when two persons opened fire on their vehicle in the Thandi Sarak area of Hyderabad.
Kamal told PPF he was shot on the left shoulder while another bullet hit Ahmed’s hand and a third bullet struck the van. Despite being injured, the driver did not stop, Kamal explained, but rather drove the van to hospital. Both Kamal and Ahmed are reported to be out of danger.
Kamal believes that he was attacked because of his journalistic activities.
A general meeting of the Hyderabad Press Club, presided over by president Muhammad Hussain Khan, condemned the attack on the Geo News team.
The Hyderabad police have registered a case and further investigation is underway. Station House Officer Malik Riaz said the police were currently interrogating 10 suspects, who were detained after pickets were set up at various spots.
