(CMFR/IFEX) – A local television reporter recently sought police help when two motorcycle-riding men tailed him while he was on his way home in General Santos City, 980 km south of Manila.
According to a police blotter dated 10 October 2005, ABS-CBN’s provincial reporter, Sonny Sombreo, was on his way home from a “personal meeting” at a local restaurant, when he noticed suspicious-looking men following him. Riding aboard his own motorcycle, Sombreo sped off to the nearest police station when he noticed that the men continued to follow him even after he stopped at a convenience store. The journalist reported that the men looked at him “as if planning something to do to [him].”
It is unclear whether the incident is related to Sombreo’s work as a journalist but he has recently reported on several crimes in the local community. He could not be reached for comment.
Just a week earlier, Danilo Aguirre, a business correspondent of the “Mindanao Bulletin”, survived a gun assault by an alleged hitman in the same city (see IFEX alerts of 6 and 4 October 2005).
