This 3 May in Riga, IPI World Press Freedom Hero Mazen Darwish – renowned Syrian journalist, free expression campaigner, and previously one of the most important sources of information about the Syrian conflict – will be honoured with the prestigious UNESCO/Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize.
But if nothing changes, Mazen won’t be in Riga to accept his award.
Syrian authorities have imprisoned Mazen in connection with his journalistic work since February 2012. For two years he was held without charge. In 2014 he was finally accused of spurious “terrorism” offences. Hearings in his case have been postponed 21 times and the court has refused to apply a government amnesty that should have brought Mazen freedom.
The world, and Syria, need Mazen’s voice – and he needs yours. Click here to sign up to take part in a Thunderclap campaign to send a unified message across the world calling on Syria’s government to #FreeMazen.
Thunderclap allows multiple users across social media such as Facebook, Twitter and Tumblr to share a single message simultaneously in order to generate maximum attention. Once you sign up and give Thunderclap permission to access your account for this limited purpose, your voice will be added to those scheduled to issue a unified call to #FreeMazen on May 3.
