(HKJA/IFEX) – The HKJA is protesting action by security officers to obstruct
Hong Kong journalists covering the visit to Beijing by three Federation of
Students representatives opposing the re-interpretation of the Basic Law by
the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress.
Public security officers detained some ten Hong Kong journalists in Beijing.
They confiscated their film and videos and made them sign confessions before
releasing them.
Covering news is the duty of journalists. By preventing Hong Kong
journalists from covering the student action, which is of great significance
to Hong Kong’s people, Beijing has violated the principles of press freedom.
The HKJA urges Beijing to respect this freedom and repeal all restrictions
on Hong Kong journalists covering stories on the mainland.
