**Updates IFEX alert of 14 July 1998**
IFJ is delighted by this happy resolution and is very pleased that the
spirit of dialogue prevailed. IFJ reiterates its support for members of the
media working for a free and independent press.
Background Information
Four journalists at the hotel Mazafran de Zeralda, a secured site located on
the west coast of Algeria some 20 kilometres from Algiers (the capital
city), began a hunger strike on 2 July 1998. They were protesting the
decision by authorities to transfer the journalists housed at the hotel to
the Matares de Tipaza hotel, which is located more than 70 kilometres from
Algiers. The lack of security at the new hotel, and on the road that would
take them to and from their place of work in Algiers, were the principal
reasons cited by the journalists for their protest.
