(IJC/IFEX) – Two editors of “The NEWS” and “TEMPO” magazines were
arrested on 17 October 1997. Demola Abimboye, associate editor of
“The News”, and Gbenga Alaketu, assistant editor of “TEMPO”, were
picked up while having supper in a restaurant at Ogba, a Lagos
suburb. Four plainclothes policemen entered the restaurant at
about 6:45 pm and effected the arrest.
The two journalists were taken to police headquarters in Alagbon
Close, Ikoyi, Lagos, from where they were transported to Abuja on
18 October. They are now being detained at the Police Force
Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Headquarters, Garki
District, Abuja. The government has issued no statement on the
arrest of the two journalists.
Despite these latest arrests, both magazines continue to publish.
This week’s edition of “The NEWS” has appeared on newsstands, and
a source at the editorial offices of the International
Communications Network Limited, which publishes both magazines,
confirmed that “PM News”, its afternoon daily, would still be
sold. The magazines’ other editors are still in hiding.
