(RSF/IFEX) – On 12 June 1998, free-lance photographer France Keyser, “Le
Parisien” correspondent Gilles Picheran, and Jean-Manu Simoes of the Sipa
news agency were taken in for questioning at the headquarters of the office
concernced with immigration control and illegal employment (Direction de
contrôle de l’immigration et de lutte contre l’emploi clandestin, DICILEC),
in Paris. The photographers’ equipment was also seized. The trio was held
for two hours, then taken to police headquarters. The photographers were
released two hours later and their equipment was returned. They had been
covering the action of a group protesting the expulsion of foreigners living
in France without proper papers (“personnes en situation irrégulière”).
Thierry Chiarello, cameraman for Reuters TV, who was covering the clashes
between police forces and the demonstrators in front of the DICILEC office,
was ordered by police to stop filming, while his camera was also
confiscated.
